The Chesterton Police Department is reminding folks that trick-or-treat in all Duneland communities--Chesterton, Porter, Burns Harbor, and unincorporated Porter County--is scheduled from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31.

Trick-or-treat will be held in Portage from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 31.

The CPD is asking all motorists to drive carefully, slowly, and defensively; to be patient; and to be prepared to act immediately when driving in or through a congested area or neighborhood.

Forecasted weather conditions indicate cool temperatures, so plan accordingly, the CPD said. “If you choose to wear coats, please wear bright colors. In the event of rain, carry light colored umbrellas.”

All participants are also strongly encouraged to carry some sort of illumination. Parents and older kids should wear brighter or lighter colored clothes or costumes, carry a bright flashlight or the neon colored glow sticks, and consider wearing reflective tape on clothes or costumes.

Walk in groups and try not to run from house to house. Where possible, use the sidewalk, look all ways before crossing any street or intersection, and don’t cross the street between parked cars.

In addition, avoid costumes which interfere with you or your children’s ability to see clearly.

And carry a cell phone.

Children should eat no candy until they’ve returned home and parents have had an opportunity to inspect it.

Only approach homes whose exterior or porch lights are illuminated. If the interior lights are on but exterior lights are not, pass on.

Anybody--motorists, parents, children, or homeowners--who observes or experiences any suspicious or concerning activity should call the CPD at (219) 926-1136.

In the case of an emergency, dial 911 and make sure you are familiar with your location or the street you are on. All police departments will be out in force during and after trick-or-treat hours.
