The Porter County Health Department (PCHD) was reporting this morning 46 new COVID-19 cases over the last 24 hours (39 new cases on Monday), to bring the total so far to 2,955, up from 2,909 on Monday.

Four of those new cases were reported in long term care facilities (LTCFs), to bring to six the number of new cases reported in Porter County LTCFs since Friday. All six cases are active. Since the pandemic began, 125 cases have been reported in LTCFs. Of those 125 cases, one is currently hospitalized, 31 have died, and 88 have recovered.

Also: for the first time in months, the majority of new cases reported in a 24-hour period are in the older demographics: 24 or 52 percent. Ten were reported in the 50-59 (468 total); seven in the 60-69 (299 total); one in the 70-79 (166 total); five in the 80-89 (82 total); and one in the 90-and-over (39 total).

Meanwhile, 22 of the new cases--or 48 percent--were reported in the younger demographics: five in the 0-19 (437 total); six in the 20-29 (551); four in the 30-39 (470 total); and seven in the 40-49 (443 total)

As of today, 437 cases have been diagnosed in children or teens, or 14.8 percent of all cases (14.9 percent on Monday). On July 7, only 39 children or teens had been diagnosed of the 765 total cases at the time: or 5.1 percent.

No additional deaths were reported today. To date, 50 Porter County residents have succumbed to COVID-19.

Other Indicators

PCHD recently introduced other indicators on its COVID-19 dashboard: a seven-day rolling average of new cases per 100,000 residents; and a seven-day rolling average unique-individual positivity rate.

-- New cases per 100,000 residents as of today: 170 (161 on Monday): the highest per-100,000 average since the pandemic began.

-- Unique-individual positivity rate as of Oct. 12: 11.0 percent (11.0 percent on Oct. 11). The highest seven-day rolling average recorded since PCHD began tracking it on June 1 was 11.6 percent on Oct. 5 and again on Oct. 7. Note: the positivity rate lags up to eight days due to Indiana State Department of Health reporting methods.
