County parks tell of upcoming activities

* Friday Family CampOut -- Grab your tent on Friday, Aug. 16, for some hot dogs and marshmallows and join other families for this affordable fun night of camping at Sunset Hill Farm County Park. Set up begins at 5 p.m. and last until 7 p.m. Activities begin at 6 p.m. Camping is unsupervised. Cost is $15 per family.

* Go FishIN at Brookdale -- Learn to tie knots, prepare a hook, proper casting and safety in and around the water at the lake at Brookdale Park on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 1 to 3 p.m. This is a free activity. All fishing equipment is included. Just come out and enjoy a day of fishing and fun.

* Meet the Animals and Family Hike -- On Saturday, Aug. 23, families are invited to stop by Sunset Hill Farm from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and meet the animals and their caretakers and then stay for a short hike around the park with our Naturalist. This is a free program.

* Sunset Hill Walk Fit sponsored by Porter Regional Hospital -- Each Wednesday through Oct. 30, Jenna Martin, RN, will provide guidance and tips on healthy and nutritious eating along with a three mile group walk weekly with support for a personalized daily walking program. This 14-week program is open to men and women 18 years and older. Dress appropriately to briskly walk for one hour. Cost is $50 per person.

* Walk Valpo 13.1 Training Program for the Valpo United Way sponsored race -- This (walk) training program, sponsored by Porter Regional Hospital, will take place Thursdays at 6 p.m., Aug. 15 to Nov. 10, for a cost of $75. The 12-week program will help you complete a half marathon--by walking it. Jenna Martin, RN, will guide, coach, and encourage participants to fulfill their goal of completing a half marathon. Participants must be able to walk 3 miles in 45 minutes. Program fee includes race registration and t-shirt, weekly training schedule, check-ins, workout tips and motivational emails. The first meeting will be at Sunset Hill Farm County Park and following meetings will be at various locations.

* Girls on the Run Track Program -- This transformational learning program for girls ages 8 to 13 will teach life skills through dynamic, conversation based lessons and running games. Programs will be at Sunset Hill Farm and Woodland Park in Portage Sept. 3 through Oct. 12. Call Becky Krieger at (219)-734-0203 for more information.
