County parks present events and programs in July

The Porter County Parks and Recreation Department has announced activities and programs available to residents for their wellness and enjoyment throughout the month of July.

*  Camp FUNset Registration Still Open! Join the parks department for the final four, fun-filled, week-long, sessions of Camp FUNset! The next camp is Animal Adventures, running July 14-17. This camp is brand new and will introduce campers to the variety of wildlife that call Sunset Hill Farm home as well as special farm time with ponies, a steer and chickens! To celebrate this brand new camp there is a $15 discount available when the code “ANIMAL” is used at registration. Camp is open to 1st-8th graders and is only $80/session (scholarships are available). Find more details or register at www.portercountyparks.org or call our office at 219-465-3586.

*  Sunset Hill Farm 80th Anniversary Festival: Mark your calendars for July 26 to join in a free festival at Sunset Hill Farm County Park to celebrate the farm’s rich 80 year history. The event will include games and activities for all ages, along with a historic baseball game between the Deep River Grinders and Sunset Hill Colonels, at 12 p.m., and an exhibit and presentation featuring fascinating information on this vital piece of Porter County history. The festival begins at 11 a.m. and lasts until 3 p.m. Bring the whole family out for this free and fun event.

*  Four-week Meditation Series: Each Monday until July 21, join an instructor at Brincka-Cross Gardens from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. to learn the ins and outs of meditation, focusing on both the mind and body. Participants must attend a Meditation Workshop before participating in the 4 week Meditation Series. Cost for the series is $35 or $10 per each session.

*  Meet the Animals: On Fridays, June 11 and July 25, families are invited to stop by Sunset Hill Farm from 10 to 11 a.m. to meet the animals and their caretakers. This is a free program.

*  Family Hikes: On Fridays, July 11 and July 25, come out and enjoy Sunset Hill Farm with the park naturalist from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. A new month will always bring a new topic for exploration and discussion, from geology to history and beyond. This is a free program.

*  Young Artists at Sunset Hill: On Saturday, July 12, from 1 to 2 p.m., a class for youth artists of all skill levels will take place at Sunset Hill Farm. Participants will create and take home their project the same day. Cost for this program is $8.

*  Reiki Share: Have you participated in a Reiki program in the past? Come share experiences and put your Reiki skills to practice with others during a relaxing afternoon at Brincka-Cross Gardens on Saturday, July 13 from 2 to 4 p.m. Cost is $10.

*  Family Night at Sunset Hill: Escape the weekday grind by coming out to enjoy a relaxing evening activity with the Park Naturalist on Wednesday, July 16 from 6 to 7 p.m. Sunset Hill is a large area full of many different living things just waiting to be discovered. Take a break during the week to enjoy all that nature has to offer. This is a free program.

*  Gardenside Chat: Every Monday and Wednesday from June to October, meet the Park Horticulturist at Sunset Hill Farm from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. to help plant, weed and maintain the garden and ask gardening questions. This is a free program.

*  Year Round Run Club: On Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 to 9 a.m., join the Sunset Hill Run Club for a run to discover the beauty of Sunset Hill. The length of the run varies but will traverse grass, hills and woodland trails. This is a free program.

*  Women’s Walk Club at Sunset Hill Farm County Park-sponsored by Porter Regional Hospital: Come to Sunset Hill for a walk on the challenging terrain of the park, every Tuesday and Thursday from 8-9 a.m. The walk will traverse grass, hills, and woodland trails. Must be 18 years or older. This is a free program.

*  Sunset Dog Walkers at Sunset Hill Farm County Park: Bring your four-legged friend on a leash for a walk on the trails at Sunset Hill Farm on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-11 a.m. The walk will offer wellness information and encouragement for the dogs and their walkers. Must be 18 years or older. This is a free program.

*  Weekday Walk at Sunset Hill Farm County Park: Come to Sunset Hill for a walk on the challenging terrain of the park. The program continues each Wednesday at 6 p.m. until Oct. 29. The walk will traverse grass, hills, and woodland trails. Open to men and women 18 years or older. This is a free program.

*  Weekly Open Studio with Acrylics: Beginners will learn basic painting techniques from an experienced acrylic painter. Sessions will be on Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Sunset Hill Farm. Season artists are also welcome to come and bring their own ideas for projects. No personal supplies needed. Cost is $5.
