County hospitalizations spike; another death

The Porter County Health Department (PCHD) reported after deadline on Wednesday an overnight spike in COVID-19 hospitalizations not seen in nearly five months: 25, up from six on Tuesday.

According to the Chesterton Tribune’s records, the most hospitalizations reported on any one day since the pandemic began in Porter County was 28, on May 20. The last time hospitalizations exceeded 25 in Porter County was on June 2, when 27 were reported.

Of the 25 hospitalizations reported on Wednesday, nine were of long-term care facility (LTCF) residents, up from only one such hospitalization on Tuesday.

Another Death

PCHD also reported on Wednesday the death of another Porter County resident from COVID-19. The victim was in the 40-49 demographic and resided in a Center Township LTCF.

To date, 55 Porter County residents have died of COVID-19. Eleven of them were Dunelanders: nine Westchester Township residents and two Liberty Township. Twenty-one were Portage Township residents; 21 Center Township; one Union Township; and one Porter Township.

Deaths by demographic: two in the 40-49; seven in the 50-59; seven in the 60-69; 13 in the 70-79; 13 in the 80-89; and 13 in the 90-and-over.

New Cases

Meanwhile, PCHD reported 62 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday (83 new cases on Tuesday), to bring the total so far to 3,586.

Of those, 35--or 56 percent--were diagnosed in the younger demographics: four in the 0-19 (515 total); 15 in the 20-29 (662); nine in the 30-39 (570 total); and seven in the 40-49 (535 total).

The remaining 27 cases--or 44 percent--percent were diagnosed in the older demographics: 11 in the 50-59 (561 total); nine in the 60-69 (373 total); four in the 70-79 (205 total); and three in the 80-89 (110 total). Total in 90-and-over: 55.


PCHD reported two new COVID-19 cases in LTCFs, to bring the total so far to 198. Of those, nine are hospitalized, up from one on Tuesday; 88 have recovered, a downgrade from the 89 recoveries reported on Tuesday; and 35 have died, up from 34 on Tuesday.

As of Wednesday, there were 75 active cases in Porter County LTCFs, up from 73 on Tuesday.

Active Cases

As of Wednesday, PCHD was reporting 2,780 total recoveries, downgraded from 2,785 on Tuesday; and 55 total deaths.

Total active cases in Porter County: 751, up from 685 on Tuesday.

Other Indicators

PCHD recently introduced other indicators on its COVID-19 dashboard: a seven-day rolling average of new cases per 100,000 residents; and a seven-day rolling average unique-individual positivity rate.

-- New cases per 100,000 residents as of Wednesday: 336 (334 on Tuesday): the highest per-100,000 average since the pandemic began.

-- Unique-individual positivity rate as of Oct. 20: 15.4 percent (15 percent on Tuesday). Note: the positivity rate lags up to eight days due to Indiana State Department of Health reporting methods.

Duneland Cases by Township

-- Westchester: 435 cases (433 on Tuesday). Ninety-one active cases.

-- Liberty: 222 cases (215 on Tuesday). Forty-nine active cases.

-- Jackson: 67 cases (66 on Tuesday). Thirteen active cases.

-- Pine: 14 cases (14 on Tuesday). Two active cases.

Other Townships

-- Portage: 1,175 cases (1,152 on Tuesday). 209 active cases.

-- Center: 995 (981 on Tuesday). 242 active cases.

-- Washington: 144 cases (138 on Tuesday). Twenty-five active cases.

-- Union: 189 cases (185 on Tuesday). Thirty-three active cases.
