County virus cases top 2,000

The Porter County Health Department was reporting this morning 34 new COVID-19 cases over the last 24 hours (23 new cases on Thursday), to bring the total so far to 2,020, up from 1,986 on Thursday.

Of those 34 new cases, 21--or 62 percent--were diagnosed in the younger demographics: four in the 0-19 (295 total); four in the 20-29 (403); six in the 30-39 (304 total); and seven in 40-49 (309 total).

To date, 295 cases have been diagnosed in children or teens, or 14.6 percent of all cases (14.7 percent on Thursday).Ê

On July 7, only 39 children or teens had been diagnosed of the 765 total cases at the time: or 5.1 percent.

Meanwhile, seven patients are currently hospitalized, unchanged from Thursday. Total active cases in Porter County: 220, up from 186 on Thursday.

To date, 119 COVID-19 cases have been reported in Porter County’s long-term care facilities, unchanged from Thursday. Of those 119, one is currently hospitalized, 29 have died, and 81 have recovered, also unchanged from Thursday. As of today, there were nine active COVID-19 cases in the county’s long-term care facilities.

Duneland cases by township:

-- Westchester: 228 cases (223 on Thursday). Thirty-six active cases.

-- Liberty: 115 cases (113 on Thursday). Twenty active cases.

-- Jackson: 33 cases (unchanged from Thursday). Eight active cases.

-- Pine: 11 cases (unchanged from Thursday). No active cases.

Other townships:

-- Portage: 699 cases (688 on Thursday). Fifty-nine active cases.

-- Center: 554 cases (546 on Thursday). Forty-fiveÊactive cases. Center Township’s total includes Valparaiso University students.

-- Washington: 90 cases (unchanged from Thursday). Six active cases. Washington Township’s total includes Porter County Jail inmates.

-- Union: 111 cases (108 on Thursday). Fourteen active cases.
