Ashley Heilmann, a senior at Chesterton High School, is representing Chesterton and northwest Indiana at the state finals for the Distinguished Young Women of Indiana Scholarship program. She is in Kokomo, IN, this week with 21 other girls from across the state. The theme of this week’s fun is the Roaring 20's.

Participants are learning interview skills, team building skills, touring schools, teaching kids to "Be your best self,” and touring Kokomo businesses and hearing from leaders of those companies, along with volunteering at many events this week.

The competition will be held this Thursday, Friday and Saturday for scholarship awards. The girls can win scholarships in Scholastics, Interview, Be Your Best Self Expression, Essay, Fitness, and Talent.

The goal is to allow these extremely smart, involved and talented girls showcase their life-long hard work and dedication to school, community and a particular talent or talents they've learned since they were young, such as piano, dance, speed painting, dribbling a soccer ball, and singing.

Heilmann won the at-large spot for Northwest Indiana a few months ago and is representing Chesterton at the state finals. Awards totaling nearly $30,000 will be presented on Saturday.

Heilmann is a member of the CHS Sandpipers Show Choir, a National Honor Society member, participates in German Club, was a German/American exchange student, a member of Horticulture Club, takes voice lessons, was involved in many dance classes growing up. She volunteers and has been working at Culver's, since age 15, working over 20 hours a week.

She has committed to Ball State University, with hopes of pursuing a career in teaching.
