CHS girls soccer and basketball teams suspended; C19 positive student attended Valpo prom

Chesterton High School has temporarily suspended its girls soccer and basketball programs after “multiple student-athletes” began “exhibiting multiple symptoms of COVID-19.”

According to a statement released to parents on Saturday, those students have been in “direct contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19,” and they in turn “have been in close contact with other student-athletes in the girls basketball and soccer teams.”

“As a result, and out of an abundance of caution, both the girls basketball and girls soccer programs will cease operations through Wednesday, Aug. 5,” the statement said. “This 14-day quarantine has been recommended by the Porter County Health Department.”

Meanwhile, the Chesterton Tribune has learned that the student who tested positive for COVID-19 last week--and whose close contact with several members of the 2020 class prompted CHS to cancel Friday’s scheduled in-person commencement ceremony--is believed to have been infected at an unofficial “prom” organized by Valparaiso High School parents and held inside the Porter County Expo Center on Wednesday, July 15.

The event, dubbed “PROMised,” was announced on the ValpoLife website and open to juniors and seniors of the 2019-20 school year. "Dress Code: Formal or Semi-formal,” the announcement reads, but it makes no mention of masks. All attendees were, however, required to bring a “waiver signed by parents.”

Photos of the event posted to the web do show some students wearing masks, but they appear to have been a small minority. Many photos show close-quarter clusters of maskless students dancing.

PROM-ised was sponsored by a Who’s Who of prominent Valparaiso businesses and organizations, including Valpo Noon Kiwanis, A Pink Boutique, Valparaiso YMCA, Family Express, We Create DJs, ValpoLife, Teachers Credit Union, Judge Mary DeBoer, Applebee’s, Alyssa Despoy Photography, First Source Bank, Judee’s, Firehouse Subs, Ben’s Pretzels, Jimmy Johns, Strack, Red Robin, Five Guys, Blackbird Cafe, Culver’s, DQ North Valpo, Rise N Roll, BoyConn Printers, Ivy Spa Nails, Purple Door Bridal Boutique, Century 21 Alliance, and Knight & Knight Attorneys at Law.
