Ground has been
broken on the addition to the Duneland Unit of the Boys and Girls Club.
Actually, ground
has been broken twice, as folks who frequently pass the facility at 521 W.
1100N have undoubtedly noticed from the pair of excavations bracketing the
club: one on the east side of the current building but also one on the west
side.
In fact the
addition itself is being built onto the east and south sides of club.
Meanwhile, to the west, “the playing field is literally being leveled,” as
Duneland Unit Director Joe Juarez told the Chesterton Tribune today.
As it happens, the
lay of that particular piece of land has always sloped down to the wetlands
behind the club, making it a poor place to play a game of soccer or
football. So the field is being re-graded and smoothed, Juarez said.
The addition itself
will include a full-size gymnasium; a two-story rock climbing wall; a
Healthy Lifestyles Classroom; an Academic Success Classroom; and a Teen Tech
Lounge with digital recording capability.
The commercial
addition and remodel of the Duneland Unit (with a total estimated value of
$3,638,000) easily lead the list of building permits issued by the
Chesterton Building Department in May.
