Bike Run and Benefit to aid Shawn Nicola in regaining sight

The Mill Bar and Grill will be hosting a Poker Run and Benefit for Shawn Nicola on July 29, at 295 Melton Rd., Burns Harbor. The event is to raise funds to help Nicola receive eSight, an experimental treatment for his diminished eyesight.

Registration will begin at 10 a.m., first bike out at 11 a.m., and last one in at 4:30 p.m.. Cost is $10 per person, $15 per couple. Participants must be 21 years of age or older.

Shawn Nicola is a lifelong resident of Chesterton, Indiana, though he spent much of his life at the Indiana School for the Blind in Indianapolis. Shawn was diagnosed as an infant with X-linked juvenile retinoschisis, a rare genetic disorder, affecting only 1 in 10,000 people. The rare mutation affects a protein which is vital to the development and maintenance of the retina. This affects the center vision and is neither curable nor treatable.

Experimental treatments, including 15 surgeries before the age of ten have had no beneficial effect on Shawn’s vision. Shawn will never be able to drive or work. As is typical of the disease, Shawn’s eye sight has remained at 2400/2700 since adolescence. Shawn will never live a whole life without the benefit of eSight.

eSight is an experimental treatment which Medicaid will not pay for on the basis that it’s a technology which will be obsolete in a short amount of time. Shawn has been able to raise a fair amount of money with the help of friends and family. With just a bit of help from the community, he will be able to see clearly for the first time in his life.

Come on out, enjoy the day, give some assistance for this worthy cause and change a life.
