Chesterton Police Chief Dave Cincoski is urging folks planning to attend the
fireworks extravaganza at Indiana Dunes State Park on Friday—and folks just
planning to be in the vicinity of Ind. 49—to expect traffic congestion and
long waits.
“Have patience getting in and getting out,” Cincoski said. “People will show
up at different times but everybody wants to get out at the same time.”
Those who don’t want to drive themselves can avail themselves of a shuttle
service arranged by the Chesterton/Duneland Chamber of Commerce.
Between 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. Friday, six buses will run continuously from
Chesterton Middle School and drop riders off at Porter Beach. There’s no
cost for the service but riders are being urged not to bring large coolers
or other items onto the buses. “Just knapsacks and packs that will fit in
the lap,” Chamber Executive Director Heather Ennis said.
Ennis noted that there will be 10 food vendors at Indiana Dunes State Park
and that a band will play both before and after the fireworks.
But she reiterated Cincoski’s advice: “It will be crowded,” Ennis said.
“Traffic will be long. Be patient.”
