Another virus death in county, another single day new case record

Another Porter County resident has succumbed to COVID-19, the Porter County Health Department (PCHD) reported after deadline  on  Thursday.

The victim was a Center Township resident in the 50-59 demographic residing in a long-term care facility (LTCF).

To date, 63 Porter County residents have died of COVID-19. Twelve of them were Dunelanders: eight Westchester Township residents and four Liberty Township. Twenty-three were Portage Township residents; 25 Center Township; and three Union Township.  Deaths by demographic: three in the 40-49; eight in the 50-59; 10 in the 60-69; 14 in the 70-79; 14 in the 80-89; and 14 in the 90-and-over.

In the six days since Friday, Oct. 30, COVID-19 has claimed the lives of seven Porter County residents.

New Cases

Also on Thursday, PCHD reported 196 new cases of COVID-19 (56 new cases on Wednesday), to bring the total so far to 4,514.

Those 196 cases represent the most ever reported in a 24-hour period by PCHD, exceeding the previous record of 157, set only three days before, on Monday, Nov. 2.

Of those 196 new cases, 119--or 61 percent--were in the younger demographics: 22 in the 0-20 (637 total); 35 in the 20-29 (810 total); 24 in the 30-39 (712 total); and 38 in the 40-49 (693 total).

The remaining 77 cases--or 39 percent--were in the older demographics: 40 in the 50-59 (730 total); 24 in the 60-69 (489 total); eight in the 70-79 (248 total); three in the 80-89 (129 total); and two in the 90-and-over (66 total).


Meanwhile, as  of Thursday, 23 Porter County residents were hospitalized with COVID-19, up from 21 on Wednesday.


None of the 196 new cases reported on Thursday was in a long-term care facility. The total to date remains 226.

Of those 226 cases, seven are currently hospitalized, down from eight on Wednesday; 98 have recovered, unchanged from Wednesday; and 41 have died,  up from 40 on Wednesday.

Right now there are 87 active COVID-19 cases in Porter County LTCFs.

Over the first six months of the pandemic--from March 17, when PCHD first started tracking COVID-19 numbers, to Oct. 16--a total of 119 cases was reported by LTCFs. In the 20 days since, that number has grown by fully 107 new cases, or 90 percent.

Active Cases

PCHD reported 3,099 recoveries on Thursday, unchanged from Wednesday.

Total active cases in Porter County, after subtracting the 3,099 recoveries and 63 deaths: 1,352, up from 1,157 on Wednesday,

Other Indicators

PCHD  recently introduced other indicators on its COVID-19 dashboard: a seven-day rolling average of new cases per 100,000 residents; and a seven-day rolling average of the unique-individual positivity rate.

-- New cases per 100,000 residents as of Thursday: 484 (430 on Wednesday; 340 on Thursday, Oct. 29).

-- Unique-individual positivity rate as of Oct. 28: 19.9 percent (19.6 percent on Oct. 27; 17.5 percent percent on Oct. 21).  Note: the positivity rate lags up to eight days due to Indiana State Department of Health reporting methods.

Duneland Cases by Township

-- Westchester: 532 cases (509 on Wednesday). 142 active cases.

-- Liberty: 293 cases (282 on Wednesday). Ninety active cases.

-- Jackson: 77 cases (73 on Wednesday). Sixteen active cases.

-- Pine: 18 cases (16 cases on Wednesday). Five active cases.

Other Townships

-- Portage: 1,438 cases (1,381 on Wednesday). 359 active cases.

-- Center: 1,297 (1,227 on Wednesday). 476 active cases.

-- Washington: 167 cases (162 on Wednesday). Thirty-six active cases.

-- Union: 255 cases (246 on Wednesday). Eighty-four active cases.
