Another death in Porter County, but last week's surge in cases slows

The Porter County Health Department reported another COVID-19 death on Saturday, the 22nd so far in the county.

The victim was a Center Township resident in the 60-69 age group.

But today the Health Department was reporting only 32 new cases over the last four days (compared to 47 new cases over Thursday and Friday of last week), to bring the total to 499.

Seven new cases were reported on Saturday; seven on Sunday; 14 on Monday; and five today.

Compare the 6.9-percent increase over the last 96 hours to the 11.2-percent increase over the previous 48 hours.

Sixteen patients are currently hospitalized, down from 17 on Friday; while 303 have recovered, up from 287 on Friday, an increase of 5.6 percent.

To date 22 Porter County residents have died from COVID-19: four Westchester Township residents; one Liberty Township resident; 10 Portage Township residents; and seven Center Township residents. Deaths by demographic: five 50-59; one 60-69; four 70-79; seven 80-89; and five 90-and-over. Ten men have died and 12 women.

Total active cases in Porter County, after subtracting recoveries and deaths: 174 (159 on Friday).

Total COVID-19 tests conducted in Porter County as of Monday, according to the Indiana State Department of Health: 4.044, up from 3,578 on Friday, an increase of 13 percent over the previous 72 hours.

Duneland cases by township:

-- Westchester: 35 cases (33 on Friday), four deaths (four), no hospitalizations (none), 24 recoveries (24). Seven active cases.

-- Liberty: 24 cases (21 on Friday), one death (one), two hospitalizations (two), 16 recoveries (14)). Seven active cases.

-- Jackson: two cases, no hospitalizations, one recovery (unchanged from Friday. One active case.

-- Pine: three cases, three recoveries.

Other hard hit townships:

-- Portage Township: 199 cases (185 on Friday), 10 deaths (10), four hospitalizations (five), and 119 recoveries (109).

-- Center: 132 cases (124 on Friday), seven deaths (six), nine hospitalizations (nine), and 55 recoveries (51).

-- Washington: 48 cases (47 on Friday), no hospitalizations (none), and 43 recoveries (43). These 48 cases include 40 confirmed at the Porter County Jail.

-- Union: 20 cases (19 on Friday), one hospitalization (one), and 16 recoveries (16).
