56th annual Chesterton Art Fair Saturday and Sunday

Back To Front Page

The 56th Annual Chesterton Art Fair will be held Saturday and Sunday, August 2-3 at Hawthorne Park in Porter, IN. The hours of the fair are 10-5 each day and the admission charge is $5 per person for the entire event. Parking is free.

Mary Acton will be returning for her second year participating in the Art Fair. She creates Pysanky eggs, or Ukranian eggs, using a method that involves wax and dyes. The finished effect is a very detailed, colorful pattern or image on an egg that can be enjoyed as an ornament, or a stand-alone piece of art. Acton works with a variety of eggs, ranging from standard chicken eggs, to very large ostrich eggs.

Acton's interest in Pysanky began with a class at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina, and quickly grew into the current showcase of the art at art fairs and local markets. She also teaches pysanky eggs classes at the Chesterton Art Center at various times throughout the year. Guests will be able to find her in tent number 37 on Art Fair weekend.

Other local participating artists from Chesterton include Chris Acton (weaving), Jayde Peterson (jewelry), Rita Jackson (ceramics), and MaryAnn Pals (pastels). Porter artists include Stephanie Carnell (printmaking), Mark VanderVinne (oils), and Carol Shepherd (jewelry). These artists, along with 90 others from 11 states will be exhibiting artwork in a multitude of mediums - painting, drawing, photography, jewelry, sculpture, weaving, glass and pottery, to name a few.

The Golden Fingers, a Chesterton-based ukulele band, will perform each day at the Art Fair. Volunteers from local churches will be in charge of the food and beverage booths. A children's activity booth will allow kids the opportunity to create a piece of art.

Proceeds from the Chesterton Art Fair go to the Art Education Fund at the Chesterton Art Center. Over 1,000 children participate in art classes each year, creating projects and learning to appreciate and enjoy art in many forms.

The Chesterton Art Center is at 115 S. 4th St., Chesterton.
