Chestertonís 4th Street Theater will present The Bridges of Madison County, The Musical, on May 24, 25, 31, June 1, 2, 6, 7, 8 and 9. Sunday performances are at 3 p.m., all other performances at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $20.

Forbidden love, self-discovery, summertime secrets and lust abound in this stage adaptation based on the novel by Robert James Waller, book by Marsha Norman, music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown.

When Robert, a ruggedly handsome National Geographic photographer, shows up in the driveway of Italian beauty Francescaís home to ask for directions, sparks immediately fly. Francesca, a dutiful wife and mother, suddenly finds herself questioning her past as she contemplates the possibility of a bright new future. Her family has gone to the Iowa State Fair, leaving her to enjoy some much needed alone time. But Robertís appearance has Francesca daydreaming about anything but being alone. When she closes her eyes, she sees Robert. Until now, her heart has only belonged to her husband and their children. Her husband, a former American serviceman, rescued her from Naples, the most bombed city in Italy. Does she still owe him loyalty for providing her an escape route from the death and destruction, never to return? Or, is it time for Francesca to rediscover herself, in ways she could have only imagined just a few short days ago? And what about Robert? Until now, he had been comfortable living a nomadic life, looking at the world through his camera lens. Is it time to remove the camera lens cover that seemed to always separate him from becoming a part of the world around him?

The music will delight as it draws the audience into the deceptively simple story of Robert and Francesca. There is a very bluesy feel to it, exciting the soul and senses. The big talent at this little theater never disappoints. Also bountiful at 4th Street Theater is the incredible sense of camaraderie.
