A member of United Steelworkers Local 6787 died on Friday of injuries sustained in a fall at the basic oxygen furnace at ArcelorMittal USA’s Burns Harbor facility.

Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris identified the man as Kenneth Gish, 61, of Wanatah.

Gish was working on a scaffold around mid-afternoon when he fell approximately 15 feet, Harris said.

“On-site medical personnel responded and immediately facilitated transportation to a local hospital,” an ArcelorMittal spokesperson said in a statement released to the Tribune.

Gish was subsequently pronounced dead at Porter Regional Hospital, Harris said, and the Coroner’s Office notified at 3:47 p.m.

An autopsy was scheduled for this morning, Harris added.

“The appropriate authorities have been notified and the company and union will conduct a joint investigation to determine the cause of this unfortunate accident,” the spokesperson said. “The ArcelorMittal family extends our deepest sympathy to the family, friends, and colleagues of Ken Gish. The health and safety of our employees and contractors are always our No. 1 priority.”
