Paul Gipson, president of United Steelworkers Local 6787, has been and will remain on sick leave.

Today Acting President Pete Trinidad released a statement on Gipson’s status.

The statement in full:

“Due to rampant speculation and rumor, I believe it is necessary to put out this update.

“Paul Gipson is currently on sick leave. He will return and resume his duties as Local Union President when his health allows. Due to HIPPA laws, Paul’s illness cannot be disclosed and as with all medical information, privacy is protected. Paul and his family appreciate your concern.

“Until he returns, as per our bylaws—Article V: Duties of Officers—I have been installed as the ‘Temporary Acting President.’ The International Union and the company have been informed of the situation.

“The Union and its leadership will remain diligent in conducting the business of the local and keeping you updated as events unfold. Our thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery go out to Paul and his family.”
