MERRILLVILLE, Ind. (AP) — Northern Indiana Public Service Co.’s parent company has a new chairman.

Ian M. Rolland was to take over as chairman of NiSource Inc. on Wednesday, a day after the company announced that Gary L. Neale would not stand for re-election to the board of directors at the annual meeting in May.

Neale said his decision to step down from the board was “the next step in a planned, orderly transition at NiSource.”

Rolland had served as lead director and chairman of the audit committee. He formerly was chairman and CEO of financial services provider Lincoln National Corp.

Neale came to the utility holding company in 1989 as president and chief operating officer and became chairman, president and CEO in 1993. He was succeeded as CEO and president by Robert C. Skaggs Jr. last year.

Merrillville-based NiSource, parent company of NIPSCO, is a Fortune 500 company whose companies deliver gas or electricity to 3.7 million customers from the Gulf Coast through the Midwest to New England.

NIPSCO has about 670,000 natural gas and 430,000 electric customers in northern Indiana.
