ArcelorMittal announces executive appointments

ArcelorMittal Flat Carbon USA is announcing the recent appointment of John D. Mengel to Vice President and General Manager, ArcelorMittal Burns Harbor; and of John J. Battisti to Chief Operating Officer, Plate Operations.

Reporting to Andy Harshaw, executive Vice-President, operations, ArcelorMittal USA, Mengel is responsible for the flat carbon steelmaking operations at Burns Harbor and finishing operations at Columbus, Ohio, overseeing the day-to-day operations of both sites including safety, quality, productivity, budgeting and cost control, and employee development.

Mengel joined predecessor company Bethlehem Steel in June 1976, where he began his career in mechanical maintenance. He has held various positions of increasing responsibility within Burns Harbor and Plate Operations, with his latest role as Chief Operating Officer, Plate Operations. He was instrumental in integrating the total USA Plate organization and most recently played a key role in the modernization of the Burns Harbor 160 Heat Treat Line.

Mengel succeeds Madhu Ranade, who recently retired after 35 years of service to ArcelorMittal and its predecessor companies.

John Battisti will assume the role of chief operating officer, plate operations, oversight of plate facilities at Burns Harbor and Gary and at Coatesville and Conshohocken, Pa.

Also reporting to Harshaw, Battisti is responsible for leading the plate business into the future with increasingly sophisticated products, ensuring that business operations are efficient and effective and creating maximum value for company stakeholders.

With nearly 35 years of industry experience, Battisti began his career with predecessor company Bethlehem Steel as a metallurgical engineer in quality assurance. He has subsequently held various positions of increasing responsibility within Burns Harbor operations, most recently as Division Manager, Plate Mills.
