VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) -- Valparaiso University has cut about 50 jobs through
early retirement packages and layoffs as it deals with the national
recession.
The university in northwestern Indiana announced in the spring that had made
retirement incentive offers to employees as it tried to reduce costs.
School spokesman Dustin Wunderlich tells the Post-Tribune of Merrillville
that 44 employees took early retirements, but that more job cuts were needed
and fewer than 10 people from various departments were laid off.
The private
Lutheran university has nearly 4,000 students and 1,060 employees. The
university also has frozen salaries for the coming year.
