CHS baseball opens season with 14-4 win

 Back To Front Page

The Chesterton baseball team wasted little time Monday night in their season-opener against Hammond Gavit.

The Trojans pounded out 12 hits and erupted for 12 second-inning runs en route to a 14-4 victory.

After Aery Pratt struck out the all three Gladiators he faced in the top of the first, Andrew Ralph led off the CHS half of the inning with a walk. After Ralph stole second, Jordan Morandini also drew a walk.

A ground out by Pratt moved each runner up 90 feet and Mike Crowley plated the season’s first run with a sacrifice fly.

The second inning onslaught started when Mitch Kobitz reached on an error. Corey Rusboldt put runners on first and second after a botched fielders choice and Brandon Roeske singled to center to score Kobitz.

Ralph’s single pushed the lead to 3-0 as Rusboldt scored. Morandini followed with a single to load the bases.

Roeske scored on Pratt’s RBI ground out and Crowley singled to score Ralph. After Austin VanderZanden was hit by a pitch, Nate Crownover’s double scored Pratt and Crowley. Kobitz again reached on an error and VanderZanden scored.

Rusboldt’s RBI ground out scored Crownover and Roeske’s RBI single plated Kobitz. After Roeske advanced to second, he scored on a single by Ralph. Pratt’s double plated Ralph and Morandini to finish the rally.

The Trojans final run of the game came on Rusboldt’s RBI ground out in the fourth that scored Dallas Milligan.

Offensively, Ralph, Morandini, Crowley and Roseke all tallied two hits in the victory. Pratt picked up the win on the mound with a three-inning, six-strikeout performance.
